Preparing for Surgery — Upper Limb Exercises
It is important to maintain strength and mobility in your upper limbs before surgery, as this will help you move safely and independently during your recovery. These exercises are designed to gently build arm, shoulder, and chest strength, and can be performed while seated or standing. Perform each movement slowly and within your comfort range. Stop if you experience any pain.
1. Shoulder Rolls Sit or stand tall. Slowly roll your shoulders forwards in a circular motion 10 times, then reverse and roll backwards 10 times.
2. Arm Raises With relaxed shoulders, slowly lift both arms out to the side and up above your head. Hold for a few seconds, then lower slowly. Repeat 10 times.
3. Chest Squeeze Hold a small pillow or towel between your hands at chest height. Squeeze gently for 5 seconds, then release. Repeat 10 times.
4. Elbow Bends With arms by your sides, bend your elbows to bring your hands up towards your shoulders, then slowly lower. Repeat 10–15 times.
5. Wall Push-Ups Stand facing a wall, arms straight and hands flat on the wall at shoulder height. Bend your elbows and lean towards the wall, then push back to the start position. Repeat 10 times.
6. Seated Arm Circles While sitting, extend your arms out to the sides. Make small circles forward for 10 seconds, then backwards for 10 seconds. Repeat 3 times.
7. Deep Breathing Take slow, deep breaths, expanding your chest fully. Hold for 3 seconds, then exhale gently. Repeat 5 times to improve lung function and relaxation.
These exercises should be performed once or twice daily, with rest as needed. Consistency will help maintain mobility and strength leading up to surgery.
